Zoos, how safe are they really?

First of all!!! Zoo Videbaek, it was this damn zoo that unnecessarily killed the perfectly healthy giraffe called Marius!

Anyways, Marius the giraffe from the Danish Jyllands Park Zoo can be relieved (for now). Marius will not be euthanized (at least not yet!) The news of the impending euthanasia of Marius was based on a misunderstanding, according to a spokesman. However when the zoo can get their hands on a female giraffe…all bets are off! According to the zoo they are afraid that both male giraffes will start fighting once a female giraffe joins them!

Was this a statement out of fear for the repercussions from visitors and animals lovers? Or, simply the truth? (Nah..who are we kidding).

So it comes down to this! Marius (2) will stay alive until they get their murderous hands on a female giraffe. What will happen next? They will breed and then they will be scared of inbreed, so it’s only a matter of time before another male giraffe will be killed.

What scares me most thought is that, it’s all freaking legal. To kill perfectly healthy animals just because they can, is far from humane.

My questions is…how can a person, who is responsible for taking care of zoo animals as in zookeepers, participate in this? If you hear them talk about the animals in their care, they just want what’s best for the animal.  Does this include participate in killing perfectly healthy animals?

How safe are zoos for animals?

I think when it comes to it; zoos are not the safest place for animals. Take the Wilhelma zoo (Stuttgart). Last Monday they lost a magnificent polar bear. A polar bear named Anton suffered greatly before he died of eating a coat someone had dropped into his stay. Its things like this that shouldn't happen. It wouldn't have happened if they took the security for their animals a bit more serious.

As for this zoo (Wilhelma) it’s not the first time something like this happened. Some years back a hippo named Egon, succumbed to a tennis ball that was thrown in by a visitor. The very last sea elephant of that same zoo succumbed to eating a stuffed animal!

There are however zoos that really take care of their animals, like they should be and not kill perfectly healthy animals because they don’t have use for them anymore!
